SIR— I am happy and proud to learn that the chairman-elect of the troubled Kibaale district, Fred Ruremera, took the decision to step down in the interest of the district.Hopefully, this will pave the way for a permanent solution to the ethnic clashes in Kibaale. But the question we must ask ourselves is why there are these clashes. Some would say it is the Banyoro and non-Banyoro fighting over land. Others think it is for political gain. The land issue is complicated and actually involves the whole country. We should learn a lesson from our warring neighbours Somalia and Rwanda before it is too late. Many poor people are living as squatters because a few people have grabbed the available land and allocated it to themselves, their friends and relatives. What is the solution to this? Clashes are not the way out; we must find a lasting solution. Our forefathers fought the colonial government for land for all Ugandans and not to replace the white Colonialists with a few black land owners. It is our duty to see that peace and love prevail among us instead of fighting one another. This love and peace can only be brought about by all of us Ugandans and not by any one tribe or political group. The Government and those in opposition should work together to build the Uganda we want and not merely blame each other.Ssaalongo A.B.G.
