SIR— When army commander Maj-Gen James Kazini offered to resign, if by this year’s end Kony and his LRA were still alive, people thought it was one of those several press reports denied at the earliest opportunity and the authors allege they were misquoted. Instead, when the no-nonsense general seized another chance with the pressmen, he shocked many people by not recanting, leaving us with a count-down to December 31, 2002.At one time Kony was reported to have been bed-ridden, suffering from AIDS. No one knows how he recovered to come back and routinely wreck havoc on the people of northern Uganda. Or could it have after all been a case of wishful thinking and the man had all along been healthy, despite his fatal lust. Unusually, this time news about a sick human being was good news and made great reading! So, would Kazini’s intelligence sources have informed him that this time round the deadly disease is likely sooner than later to claim the dreadlock rebels? This should not be construed as underestimating the might of the UPDF. I am simply considering how for a long time Kony has been elusive and succeeded in doing so. How can the army boss put his very prestigious job at stake?Well, pursuing the LRA into Sudan may prove decisive and that’s everybody’s hope and prayer. But if Kazini does not come good on his pledge, not many people will demand for his neck: he will neither have been the first nor the last to take a gamble on Kony. We shall just continue to struggle against one of the most futile and barbaric rebellions in the history of Africa.Ignatius Kabagambe, Mbale
