By Josephine Maseruka THE McKnight Foundation has given sh179m to fund women projects in Uganda through the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF), a Mengo development chapter. The three-year funding by the American Foundation, aims at uplifting the standards of rural women. The executive director of BUCADEF, Kyewalabye Male, said sh9.7m had been loaned to 12 local stockists in the districts of Mubende and Kiboga for agro-inputs. It is recoverable in six months at 2% interest. It will be used to expand agro-business and to buy farmers’ produce at reasonable prices to stop monopoly and exploitation by urban business people.Kyewalabye said the beneficiaries, who are members of the Project for Enhancement of women in agro-business (PEWAB) must sell genuine agro-inputs like chemicals, seeds and fertilisers. The project is targeting over 1,000 women with about 60 from the pilot districts of Kiboga and Mubende. Kyewalabye said the project would spread throughout Buganda over years. He appealed to beneficiaries to use the loans properly.Ends
