WORKS, communications and transport minister John Nasasira yesterday said government operations will improve when electronic records are used.Geresom Musamali reports that Nasasira said identity cards, driving permits, voters’ cards and applications for leave by government officers are some of the records that could be handled electronically by computers.He was speaking during the demonstration on how electronic government (e-government) works at the ministry’s mechanical workshops on Port Bell Road, Kampala. International Business Machines (IBM) regional manager for central and southern Africa, Anthony Okocha, led the demonstration.Other presenters were Uganda Telecommunications Limited chief operations officer Rudiger Osburg and MTN marketing and sales manager Eric Van Veen.Isingiro South MP Dr. Johnson Nkuuhe attended the function, which drew participants from several government ministries.Nasasira said the current system of operations in government departments was paper-based, slow, cumbersome and inefficient. He said sometimes documents got lost.He urged the participants to examine all options available to Uganda in its bit to adopt e-government and the risks involved.Ends
