ARMED bandits overran Kiwamu Police post near Kitalya Prisons Farm in Mityana district yesterday and made off with three guns

By GEOFREY KAMALIAND F. KIWANUKA ARMED bandits overran Kiwamu Police post near Kitalya Prisons Farm in Mityana district yesterday and made off with three guns. The daring, early morning attack took area residents by surprise as they were preparing to go to church for Sunday prayers. The situation at the trading centre remained tense yesterday, witnesses said.Police chief Katumba Wamala confirmed the attack but said he did not have enough details when contacted by midday. Security sources said the attack occurred at about 9:30am.“We have sent three mobile patrol vehicles and personnel to the area. We hope to have the details when they (Police) are through,” he said.Security sources told The New Vision the bandits, in army uniform, had earlier staged a road block and robbed a pick-up truck, registration number UAD 314X, two miles away from the Police post.“They were so many in number. They fired in the air as the Police ran in disarray. Two of the Policemen however managed to escape with their guns,” one of the sources said. The Police post is said to have a total of five guns. Luwero DPC, Godfrey Taire, said he had deployed his men to seal off all entry points at the Mityana-Luwero border. The thugs later escaped towards Kampala and branched off at Kitalya village near the prisons and vanished there. There were no arrests reported by press time, last evening. This is the second attack on a Police post in two weeks. Armed thugs who claimed to belong to the Uganda National Democratic Alliance (UNDA) of renegade Maj. Herbert Kikomeko Itongwa raided a Police post in Luwero district a fortnight ago and made off with one gun.The thugs also made a futile attempt to set the Police post on fire before vanishing through Wakiso district. The attack occurred then as other Policemen were on duty outside the station. They had earlier robbed passengers.
