THE Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, has allayed fears that the Nile Basin Initiative Bill 2002 will hurt Egyptian interests.

Ssekandi was meeting the Egyptian Ambassador, Maasoum M. Marzouk, whom he assured that Parliament had not acted on a motion moved for Uganda to denounce the agreements that gave Egypt control over the Nile.

Rwampara MP Amon Muzoora recently moved a motion in Parliament for Uganda to renounce the pre-independence agreement that gave Egypt and Sudan control over River Nile.

The motion also provided that in any new agreements entered over the Nile, Egypt should pay an annual compensation of US$2.2b to Uganda.

Ssekandi said the Bill had nothing to do with causing damage to the interests of both countries.

The Deputy Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, had referred the motion to the relevant committee for scrutiny.
