The Roman Catholic Church in Uganda has instituted investigations into allegations that one of its priests was involved in a sex scandal, reports Allan Turyaguma.
Local newspapers have for the last two weeks been publishing photos of Father Adrian Mwesigye, the chaplain of Mbarara University of science and Technology, resting on a bed with a girl.
The publications have provoked angry reactions from some members of the Catholic Church and the general public about the conduct of the priest.
The Vicar General of Mbarara Archdiocese, Msgr. Baingana Muntu, on Monday said the pictures were not enough to prove the priest’s guilt.
“We have launched an investigation into the matter and the findings will determine the next step,” he said.
Muntu said the church had been hurt by the newspaper reports, which he said were to some extent grossly exaggerated. Ends
