SADI Onito, Uganda’s most successful golfer, is among 60 players that have entered the 61st Uganda Open Championship that tees-off on Thursday.

The legendary player holds the all-time tournament record of 12 wins. An unlikely triumph at Kitante would earn the veteran a record thirteenth title, twenty-six years after his first triumph.

Having relinquished his hold of Uganda’s greens, Onito’s famed intimidating potential might not be as effective as it were at the peak of his powers, but the veteran nevertheless maintains a decent handicap 3.

By virtue of having won the last two tournaments, defending champion Deo Akope is tournament favourite.

The revered pair of Akope and Stephen Kasaija has risen in stature after participating in a number of regional tournaments, the latest being the Rwanda Open, and an anticipated battle between the two should certainly be a joy to watch.

According to the Uganda Golf Union secretary Nick Okwir, a good number of foreigners will grace local golf’s most prestigious tournament sponsored by Alam Group of Companies.

Rwanda Open top 4:
M. Adam (Tanzania)
75 76 78 229
R. Byaruhanga (Uganda)
77 75 77 229
D. Akope (Uganda)
76 76 78 230
S. Katwiremu (Uganda)
80 79 78 237

Tanzanian ace Mohamed Adam won the Rwanda Open on his debut, beating another Ugandan Robert Byaruhanga after a play-off on the par-3 number 17, reports William Muwonge.

Ugandan champion Akope was one of three Ugandan golfers who made a mark in Kigali.

“It was a closely contested tournament, it was not surprising that the winner was decided on a play-off,” Akope said.
