The United Nations Development programme (UNDP) has set aside US$125,000 (over sh230m), to support local projects concerned with the preservation of the environment.
The UNDP Resident Representative, Daouda Toure, said on Tuesday that the money, which is being channelled to the communities through the Global Environment Facility and Small Grants Programme, would also be used to eradicate poverty.
“UNDP firmly believes in actions geared towards fighting poverty and fostering sustainable human development, with special attention to the linkages between poverty reduction, environment and good governance,†he said.
Toure’s remarks were in a speech read for him by his deputy, Dan Temu, at the launching of the Lemon Grass Project which was initiated by Ntungamo Women’s Effort to Save the Environment.
