Mukono town nets 50 idlers
MUKONO – At least 50 people were arrested on Christmas Eve in the town for lack of proper identification documents. Mayor Muyanja Ssenyonga and secretary for defence Isa Ssebunya led the operation. Most of those arrested were students of Uganda Christian University, Mukono, who were found drunk in bars at 2:00am. The suspects were later handed over to the Police for screening.

‘Don’t lose your souls’
JINJA — Bishop Michael Kyomya of Busoga Diocese has urged Christians to live a Christ-centred life instead of struggling to amass wealth. He said people were pursuing material things and others committing murder in the name of riches. Kyomya told Christians at St. Andrews Church where he baptised and confirmed Christians on Sunday that it was vain to achieve wealth when one had no Christ in one’s life.

Soroti man dodges death
KAMPALA — A man who was sentenced to death by hanging in 1997 for the murder of three villagers must be one of the luckiest people this year. Joseph Omiat was until recently on death row in Luzira Prisons after he was convicted by the High Court and his death sentence confirmed by the Court of Appeal. But five Supreme Court justices recently said they were not satisfied with his conviction and set him free.

30 Wakiso inmates flee
WAKISO — Over 30 inmates have escaped from prisons in the district since May. The district council chairman, Ian Kyeyune, said in his state of the district report that 726 inmates had been discharged. He said the district had 350 inmates of which 20 are female. Kyeyune said at least 14 inmates were considered for community service.
