By Kezio D. Musoke and Grace Matsiko EIGHT members of presidential candidate Kizza Besigye's campaign team yesterday sustained serious injuries after their vehicle overturned twice on Gayaza road. They were reportedly traveling from Wakiso to Kakiri, taking loud speakers which were to be used for Besigye's campaign rally at the Gombolola offices in Kasangati. According to witnesses, their vehicle, a Toyota pick-up, overturned after the driver tried to fix wires on the dash-board while driving. Police traffic and road safety chief Grace Turyagumanawe told The New Vision that the driver, Musawo Luwago, must have been driving at a high speed with excitement over the campaign rally. The injured include John Kabereje, 46, of Busenje Busiiro, Vincent Muyingo, 21, from Wakiso, who sustained chest injuries, Paul Kiiza, 18, from Kisimbiri, who broke his ribs, one leg and jaws and another only identified as Lameka. Others include Peter Kajubi, 18, from Wakiso and Jackson Lubwama who broke his back. The driver has reportedly gone missing. He is believed to have run away in fear of being beaten by an angry mob in Wakiso. "We have not yet established more details but we know the accident has occurred around Mpererwe," Turyagumanawe said. "We have started investigations to establish under what circumstances the accident occurred. The driver has escaped, we don't know the number plate of the vehicle but we shall get more details with time," he added. Turyagumanawe said one of the victims who was seriously injured was rushed to Mulago Hospital immediately after the accident. The others were hospitalised in Wakiso Gombolola Hospital because there was no ambulance at the time. Besigye and former presidential aspirant Hajji Nasser Sebaggala visited the injured at the Gombolola hospital. Ends.
