THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has said it is confident the Ebola epidemic in Uganda has been contained.

By Charles Wendo THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has said it is confident the Ebola epidemic in Uganda has been contained. The WHO Kampala office on Thursday said in a statement that the epidemic is almost over, with only two cases detected since the beginning of this year. The statement said this implies the measures put in place to control the epidemic had been effective. Masindi district has had no Ebola case for five weeks and is only waiting for the mandatory 42 days before it is declared Ebola-free, the statement said. The 42 days elapse on Wednesday. The WHO statement appealed to the international community not to restrict the travel of goods and people in and out of Uganda. "In view of the foregoing, WHO does not see any scientific justification for international travel or trade restrictions to and from Uganda," the statement said. "We can confidently say the Ebola outbreak in Uganda has been contained. There is no need to cancel any activities or engagements with Uganda and its people due to Ebola," it said. The Gulu Director of Health Services, Dr. Paul Onek, on Tuesday said they expected a woman who was admitted on January 12 to be the last case of Ebola. Ends.
