A total of 315 people died in crashes on Kampala roads last year, the city's traffic records show, reports Davis Weddi. According to Kampala's deputy chief traffic officer, Mr. Gabriel Tibayungwa, crashes rose dramatically from 7,029 in 1999 to 8,573 last year. Vehicles involved also increased from 9,704 in 1999 to 13,836. "As you can see, this is a very big number," Tibayungwa said, adding that the traffic department had decided to intensify sensitisation on road safety, targeting especially the pedestrians and drivers. Tibayungwa attributed most of the crashes to carelessness. Ends
