A total of 450,920 ghost voters have been removed from the voters' register and the new figure now stands at 10,674,080, the Electoral Commission (EC) chairman, Hajji Aziz Kasujja, announced yesterday.

The commission also extended the issuance of voter cards to midnight yesterday, to enable those who had not received theirs, get them before the voting day. The decision was reached after agents of the presidential candidates said some voters in the districts of Jinja, Iganga, Bugiri, Gulu, Rukungiri, had not yet received their voter cards. Kasujja was meeting the agents of presidential candidates at the EC headquarters in Kampala yesterday. He said the EC was to decide on whether the cards would be issued on the polling day. Kasujja said the voter cards for some centres in Iganga, Bugiri and Jinja were being dispatched. He said the new register had been categorised according to the 214 constituencies. The register shows Nakawa division as having the highest number of voters at 127,731, while Moroto municipality has the least number, at 4,401 voters. There are 17,147 polling centres through- out the country including army centres. The agents included Amama Mbabazi and Moses Byaruhanga who represented Yoweri Museveni, George Komakech for Francis Bwengye, Judy Kamanyi for Aggrey Awori, Siraj Balinda for Mayanja Kibirige and Dr. David Mukasa for Kizza Besigye.
