Confusion marred the election in Mbale district yesterday after supporters of candidate Col. Kizza Besigye accused election officials of conducting the polls at night. Besigye's agents at Kaama B polling station in Bufumbo sub-county threatened to beat up the presiding officer, Mr. Herbert Namundu, accusing him of having opened the ballot box and started the exercise at 3.00am. Namundu, however, said the same agents witnessed the opening of the ballot box at 6.55am and signed an acknowledgement form saying they were present when the box was opened. Toffa Massa, Besigye's agent at the polling station, told The New Vision that he arrived at the station at 5.30am and found voting already in progress. He claimed Philemon Massa, Muzamiru Nabende and Hussein Nakubba had voted. He said when he complained about the anomaly, he was threatened with death. He said he reported the matter to the local administration Police at the sub-county headquarters. Namundu said Besigye's agents and supporters refused to dip their fingers in the indelible ink after voting. "When I insisted that they dip their fingers in the ink, they started heckling me and threatening to kill us in the night," Namundu said. He said by 1.30pm, ballot papers had run out and 20 people failed to vote due to the shortage. An election monitor, Beatrice Nabukonde, said she found voters trickling in when she arrived at 7.30 a.m. "The election at this station was generally not fair, she said." Ends
