Western Open golf on course

By William Muwonge FORT-PORTAL golfers will face the best from other areas at the Western Open, revived after a two year break. Stephen Kasaija, playing off handicap one, leads home players for action at Fort-Portal's par 70 Toro Club on March 24-25. Kasaija will also be defending the title he won when the event was last held in 1998. The Uganda Golf Union event has been revived after a clearing firm Transami offered sponsorship. Toro Club chairman Rugamba Kabagambe, said preparations for the event are in top gear. "We are moving on well, trophies for the event have already arrived from Kampala," Kabagambe said on phone from Fort Portal. Toro Club's other leading players including George Kituku, Charles Katemba, Francis Ngabo, Abdu Mayanja and Emmanuel Basaliza will also be in action. Toro Club's lady players including Jill Birungi and Jane Kobusingye are practising in earnest for the event. Kabagambe said Kilembe's top players William Kanyamatonwa and Ben Otwane, will also be competing. The official said golfers from Mbarara, Kabale, Jinja and Entebbe clubs would be in Fort Portal. Kampala players are also getting set for the event. The next event on the Uganda Golf Union calendar will be the Mbarara Open to be held in the western Uganda town. Mbarara Open will be followed by the Casements tournament in May. Ends
