MUK security beefed up

By Joan Mugenzi As Makerere University students returned to the campus recently, the university administration was working on the security problem. Muhwezi Murari, the university spokesman, said that following last year's murders at the university, the administration had beefed up security. The university acquired a patrol vehicle, retrained the guards, acquired radio communication systems and is recruiting new guards. Congratulations MUK administration for this move. Looks like the Northern University of Agriculture and Environmental Science is set to start. The education ministry last week sent names of nominees to President Yoweri Museveni for appointments to various offices like that of Vice Chancellor, deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Registrar and Dean of Students. Sciences seem to be getting a good deal. But on a disappointing note, some people are destroying the good work. Why would computers disappear from the Mbarara University of Science and Technology? Five senior officials at this university have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of four computers. The suspects who included Amos Ruhongole, the internal auditor Kelly Tumwine, the computer technician Amos Ruhongole, and Stephen Rutandaro, the head of security, were arrested on Monday after a computer went missing from the laboratory. Now, if you thought students are not empowered, think twice. The week saw Hajati Omar Anuna, presidential advisor on political affairs, under fire from students of Oriajini Secondary School, to reinstate their headteacher whose services were terminated recently. The students marched in demonstration from the school to the district education office and handed over a memorandum to Elson Dribiri, the acting District Education Officer, asking for their headteacher, Amos Asidri. On a firm note, Miria Matembe, Integrity minister, was right when she said that rapists should be castrated. A headteacher at Kasunga Primary School defiled a primary four child amidst cheers from other pupils! What kind of morals was this headteacher passing on. If the law was in my hands, I would definitely castrate you Mr. Ends
