By Vision Reporter Surgery experts from Uganda and other eastern African countries are performing free surgical operations in five hospitals in Mukono district from Monday to Friday this week. The operation covers Kayunga, Kawolo, Nkokonjeru, Nagalama hospitals and Nyenga health centre. It is organised by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU) and the Association of Surgeons of Eastern Africa (ASEA). Dr. Edward Nadumba, ASEA President, said the operations will be followed by a conference on Friday to update doctors on surgical skills and knowledge. He said the operations would benefit mostly patients who would find it difficult to travel to the referral hospitals. "It is a kind of poverty alleviation," he said. The surgeons previously performed similar operations in Hoima, Iganga, Kabale, Lira, Masaka and Soroti. They corrected several problems including hernias, goitres, hydrocele, elephantiasis, abnormalities of newborn babies and problems of the womb and genital organs. Ends
