By Kezio Musoke A NEW literary translation of celebrated Sudanese-Ugandan Professor, Taban Lo Liyong, will be launched today at the Uganda National Cultural Centre, National Theatre. The new publication, The Defence of Lawino, is Lo Liyong's new translation of Wer pa Lawino by Okot P' Bitek. The book is published by Fountain Publishers. Lo Liyong, who is in Uganda on invitation by FEMRITE – the Uganda Women Writers' Association, will also conduct a one-week workshop of celebrated writers in Uganda. He is currently teaching at the University of Venda in South Africa, and asserts that the translation from Okot P' Bitek's Werpa Lawino became necessary because Bitek's translation to Song of Lawino was not strictly a faithful translation. "It was one which was 'tropical striking, graphic and easily readable," Lo Liyong said. "Songs of Lawino is a version of Wer pa Lawino. It is a lighter, elaborated extended version," he said. Ends
