ARUA district proved formidable form when they recaptured the National Primary School Athletics championship in Apac on Saturday.

By Samson Opus and Geoffrey Odyek in Apac ARUA district proved formidable form when they recaptured the National Primary School Athletics championship in Apac on Saturday. Arua garnered 65 points ending the long reign of defending champions Kapchorwa in front of a big crowd at Boma ground. The West Nile district who last won the competition in 1998 in Kaliiro proved superior in the middle distance events-top scoring in the boys' category with 68 points and tied at 96 points in girls categories with hosts Apac. Apac got their best performance ever with a second place finish on 151 points, ahead of Kapchorwa who settled for third place on 105 points. Lira came fourth on 83 points, 22 points better than fifth place Kitgum while Gulu followed with 51 points ahead of Busia with 48 points. Debutantes Sironko were at the forefront of the new wave of athletics power coming eighth with 40 points leading the new districts of Katakwi, Pader and Kyenjojo who also made a strong showing. The other newcomers Wakiso had their hopes dashed by a ban for fielding a non-student Haruna Ssemakula. The Wakiso ban highlighted a complaint of biased screening and incompetent officiating that characterised the four-day event that attracted 40 districts . Ends
