MAKERERE University has ordered non-university staff off campus premises in a bid to bolster the deteriorating security at the 79 year-old institution, writes John Eremu. The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Opio Epelu, in an April 18 circular directed all staff sub-letting apartments to outsiders and university students to evict them by October 1, 2001. "The management has learnt that members of staff are sub-letting servants quarters and garages of university houses to students and other people not working within the university," said the circular copied to among others the Vice Chancellor Prof. John Sebuwufu and the officer in charge Makerere Police Post. Epelu who is in charge of the university security said the administration had on several occasions called on the staff to register occupants of their staff quarters and garages in vain. "Management has, therefore, decided that there should be no subletting of garages and servants quarters to students and non-university staff with effect from October 1, 2001," Epelu said adding, "Any persons who will contravene this decision will face disciplinary measures. Students are advised not to seek residence in the above named premises." Eperu warned that those not related to staff and not registered with the security and estates department will be arrested and prosecuted for trespassing. The measures come as security is beefed up at the campus following the killing of three students by unknown thugs since the beginning of the year. Ends
