THE International director of Action Aid, Lyndsay Stein, has commended the Uganda Government for enacting policies that address the plight of poor people in the country, reports Rashid Muzungyo. Stein, who was recently launching the five-year strategy paper for Uganda, said Uganda was the most democratic country on the African continent. She told the New Vision that the 1998 land act, the 1995 Constitution and the Universal Primary Education policy were good indicators of good governance in Uganda. Stein was particularly touched by the recently concluded presidential elections. she said the peaceful election process was a sign of political maturity among Ugandans. "I am particularly happy with the way the Government handles problems facing the poor. there is a lot of openness on issues of governance in this country compared to other African nations," Stein said. She said Action Aid would address some of the problems of the Benet, a Sabiny community settled in the Mt. Elgon Park in Kapchorwa district. Ends
