State minister for gender Vincent Nyanzi was yesterday charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Prison, reports Edith Kimuli. Police fire brigade had to break into the house in which he was being detained to take him out to court. Nyanzi reportedly locked himself in the house in Kayunga, Wakiso district, and refused to comply with Police orders to come out. It took the Police about five hours to get him out of the house, sources said. Nyanzi told The New Vision on telephone while in the house, that he was "waiting for orders from above" before he could move out of the house. A Police officer who did not want to be named said he communicated to Nyanzi through a window. Over 20 policemen were reportedly dispatched to have Nyanzi out of the house. But other sources said when the fire brigade reached the home, Nyanzi came out of the house and was taken to court. When he appeared in court at Nakawa, Nyanzi, who wore a grey suit, a blue shirt and a brown necktie, looked worried. Chief magistrate John Arutu read the charges to him. Nyanzi, who is also the Member of Parliament-elect for Busujju County, was brought to court by Police in patrol cars. He shed tears as he was driven away by the same vehicles to Luzira Prisons. His wife, father and some relatives were present at the court. The prosecution said Nyanzi murdered Vincent Mwebesa in his constituency on June 26. Nyanzi, 49, was not allowed to enter any plea and was told that he could only apply for bail in the High Court. The prosecution told the court that inquiries were continuing and the next hearing was set for July 17. Ends
