SIR-Your Letter-of-the-Day yesterday by Dr. A. Muhunde of Kabale was disappointing. The doctor believes beauty contests to be the "worst form of pornography". Has he not heard of hardcore pornographic movies, magazines and the internet that thrive on it? His letter mentions in abstract unconnected issues when he says "our view of the world, technology, environment, medical know-how ... are thrown overboard in deference for western culture". What connection is there to beauty? In this age of globalisation, surely even this doctor in Kabale realises how hard it is to stop western culture filtering through to us. He wonders what the feelings of a parent with a daughter on the catwalk are. Well, maybe pride at the daughter excelling in beauty, maybe hope that she will earn millions of dollars honestly instead of through corruption and crime. We have worse things than beauty contests happening: adultery, embezzling, murder. James Kasana, Kampala
