School Boys raise the mood for Zambia duel

By Kalungi Kabuye The Kenya Schools Combined rugby team will be coming to Uganda to play their local counterparts as a curtain-raiser for the 2003 Rugby World Cup qualifying match between Uganda and Zambia. “The Kenyan schoolboys will play a friendly against Ugandan schoolboys before the main game,” Yayiro Kasasa of the Uganda Rugby Football Union told The New Vision. “The two teams have met several times over the years, and this should a fitting curtain raiser.” Uganda takes on Zambia in the first round game, making it the first time that the national 15s team takes part in the World Cup qualifiers. The National Sevens team last year participated in the Sevens World Cup qualifiers in Nairobi. The national squad, which has been training for the last four weeks, will be divided into the Chairman’s 15, and the rest, and the two sides will play against each other at Kampala RFC grounds. The final squad of 22 players will then be chosen to go into residential training from Sunday. There will also be a schools’ trail match this morning, where the Uganda National Schools team will be chosen. Meanwhile hosts Zambia beat Cameroon 25-24 in a first round encounter last week in Lusaka. Uganda is pooled with teams in Group A of the first round encounter. The winner of the Group advances to the second round where they will meet Kenya and the winner of Group B (Botswana, Swaziland, Madagascar). Ends
