KATAKWI district has been declared a disaster struck district.

By Charles Ariko KATAKWI district has been declared a disaster struck district. The LC5 chairman, Steven Ilemukorit, in a recent letter to the Prime Minister, Apollo Nsibambi, said, “The overall situation in Katakwi has drastically deteriorated to unmanageable levels for the district local government. The condition of the displaced people living in camps is pathetic calling for intervention from every stakeholder to avert the situation.” The district has 88,623 internally displaced people living in camps. Ilemukorit said a strange disease struck one of the camps. He said malaria, abdominal diseases, skin infections and sexually transmitted diseases are rampant in the camps. Ilemukorit said the district council held an emergency meeting on Monday and declared the district ‘disaster struck’ due to massive displacement and suffering of the population in the sub-counties of Magoro, Ngariam, Usuk, Kapelebyong, Katakwi, Obalanga and Acowa. The chief commissioner of the Uganda Scouts Association, Victoria Nalongo Namusisi, said she was assembling a special scouts team to be dispatched to Katakwi to handle to train the displaced on health matters.
