By Eddie Ssejjoba FIRE on Tuesday gutted over 210 makeshift houses and a Police detachment at Kasensero fish landing site on the shores of Lake Victoria in Rakai, leaving many residents homeless. The District Police Commander, Alphonse Mbuga, told The New Vision the fire broke out at about 10:30pm when most of the residents were asleep. He said a Police post at the site was completely burnt down and all property including uniforms were destroyed. He said four suspects who had been locked in the cells were rushed out as the fire spread. “Property of about eight Police officers was destroyed as they ran for their dear lives," Mbuga said. He said the fire originated from a candle which fell down when a resident, Livingstone Kibuuka, left it burning inside his house. The police and residents destroyed some houses to create a fire corridor to prevent the fire from spreading. About 2,000 fishmongers and their families live at the site.
