Nadduli, no!

SIR—I am reacting to the article “Nadduli wants family planning stopped” in The New Vision of August 27. The number of mothers who die in Uganda every year due to birth-related causes is abnormally high (506/100,000). Yet women and children’s lives can be saved by avoiding many pregnancies and unsafe abortions, through spacing births. More children die in their first year of life in Uganda than in UK where only five out of 1,000 die annually. Uganda cannot be compared to UK, in spite of UK’s high population with a smaller land area. Nadduli should advise people to have children they can afford to care for, not increasing the number of Baganda. James Wandera, Bushenyi
