By Julius Matonya Whoever thought that headmasters were too serious to engage in the entertainment business should think twice. What do you say of a headmaster who runs a progressive primary school during day and is in night clubs entertaining patrons at night. Edward Kiyaga, headmaster of Step Up Primary School in Namasuba, on Entebbe Road in Kampala, is a lover of entertainment. “When I tell my fans that I’m a headmaster they can hardly believe it,” Kiyaga says. “But that is the truth,” he adds. Kiyaga, who graduated from Luteete Teacher Training College in 1993 as a primary school teacher, now runs Step UP Primary School during day and is in night clubs thrice a week at night. His band, Edga & The Wheels entertains patrons at various night clubs. The band plays at City Valley Bar, Kibuye, every Wednesday and on Fridays they are at Zander Complex in Entebbe. On Saturdays it stages shows at Emols Club in Namasuba. Kiyaga’s songs are regularly played on Radio Star FM 100. “I’m always busy,” Kiyaga says. “If I tell you that I do not sleep much I would not be deceiving. If I’m not preparing for lessons, supervising my teachers or running the school, then I’ll be out either composing my music, rehearsing with my band or on stage entertaining my fans,” he says. Kiyaga, says he is a devoted Christian. He goes to St Mark Protestant Church in Zzana for prayers. He also leads the church choir in gospel music. “My Christian upbringing has had a profound influence on my life. I neither smoke nor drink. I think this has helped me to remain sober despite leading a hectic life,” Kiyaga says. Kiyaga says he was inspired by his uncle the late Peterson Tusubira Mutebi of the famous Peterson Mutebi & The Tames, a band that was a house hold name in the 70’s and early 80’s. ends
