By Kyetume Kasanga THE army and the Police have stepped up patrols in Masindi district following a series of recent highway robberies. Mr John Byakumara, the district police commander and Mr. Victor Aisu, the District CID Officer, said the development followed an incident in which a Kampala taxi bound for Masindi was ambushed at Nyakibete, about 6km from Masindi town last week. The incident happened around 8:30pm. Byakumara, who arrived at the scene later that night, said unknown men wielding three guns ambushed the taxi and robbed passengers of money, mobile phones and other personal effects. “I think this is a new and incomprehensible phenomenon where thugs ambush a Masindi bound taxi well knowing the business people have already spent their money in Kampala,” Byakumara said. The driver, Godfrey Kyomugisa, said the gunmen opened fire, forcing the vehicle to swerve off the road.
