MOSCOW, Wednesday – Russia is preparing to launch a series of spy satellites into orbit to provide information for the probable US military action in Afghanistan, a senior Russian military official said on Wednesday. Announcing an “intensive launch programme,” General Anatoly Perminov, head of Russia’s space forces, said Moscow “believes the present number of satellites in orbit is largely insufficient,” the Interfax news agency reported. With regard to Afghanistan, “for the moment we can see everything we need to see, but soon a certain number of satellites will no longer be operational,” Perminov said to justify the planned launches. Russia has said it will cooperate but not take part directly in any US-led military attacks on Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the United States on Wednesday asked NATO for collective aid in preparing a riposte to terrorist attacks and NATO immediately activated Article 5 providing for such aid, a NATO spokesman said.
