KAMPALA Mayor John Ssebaana Kizito has appealed to voters to turn up in large numbers for tomorrow’s LC village polls, writes A. G. Musamali. The Church of Uganda recently objected to the holding of the polls on Sunday, saying it was a day for prayer. Archbishop Livingstone Nkoyooyo was quoted as saying that the Church could not cancel its programmes for tomorrow. But Ssebaana on Thursday told The New Vision soon after he announced his intention to run for mayorship again, that voters should exercise their rights. Democratic Party (DP) President General, Paul Ssemogerere and Deputy Mayor, Twaibu Takuba Kabuye, were among those who attended the function. “The organisation of elections is the constitutional responsibility of the Electoral Commission. “The Commission has decided that we conduct polls on a Sunday. I am sure they have reasons for doing so,” Ssebana said. “My advice to the bishops is to liaise with the commission so that they can change the date, but if the date cannot be changed, let us go ahead to vote. I cannot risk telling anybody to boycott the polls because I know how important they are as a national exercise,” he added. The mayor said that Makindye West MP Yusuf Nsubuga Nsambu, was going to steer his (Ssebaana’s) re-election campaign. He dismissed allegations that he had renamed the former Owino Market St Balikuddembe Market in order to win votes. He said the process of re-naming the market had started long ago. Ends
