By A. G. Musamali and Catherine Kigozi Stella Nambuya, a woman activist advocating the rights of sex workers, was yesterday nominated to contest the women’s seat in Kagugube parish, Kampala Central Division. Kampala prostitutes will have two supporters to back them up if Sarah Nkonge wins the mayoral race. Four people have expressed the wish to replace division chairman, Wasswa Ziritwawula, who is ready to unseat the Mayor, Ssebana Kizito. Nambuya is contesting for the seat with the incumbent, Margaret Tumwebaze. A total of 14 aspirants were nominated to contest for various parish seats in the division yesterday. Nambuya came into the limelight two years ago when she threatened to lead a sex workers’ match from Kampala to Tororo. Last year, Nambuya also threatened to sue Kampala City Council (KCC) over the detention of sex workers arrested on city streets. She abandoned her intention when KCC released most of the sex workers on bail and discontinued proceedings against them. Nambuya was required to produce this year’s graduated tax ticket and to pay sh50,000 as nomination fees and another sh50,000 for permission to put up posters in the city. She was nominated by Rose Namukasa, a businesswoman, and Solome Nambasa, a student at Bwanika Institute of Catering. The Returning Officer, John Gateni, declared Nambuya duly nominated at 12:08pm. “Having duly fulfiled all the requirements set by the Electoral Commission, I declared Stella Biira Nambuya nominated as candidate for the post of woman councillor in Kagugube parish,” Gateni said. Nambuya told The New Vision after her nomination that she wants to advance her fight for the disadvantaged people. Ends
