THE Electoral Commission has provided a Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) toll free line for aspiring candidates, who need to seek clarification during the nomination period.

The commission has also warned that “no candidate for the Kampala city divisions should be harassed or asked for a graduated tax ticket or any other fee by the city council before nomination because it is illegal.” The EC head of legal and public relations, Alexandra Nkonge, yesterday said in a press statement, “All aspiring candidates and district election officials are advised to call the MTN toll free line, number 188 for clarification on any matter that may arise during the nomination period at their centres on November 20-23.” “The line will be operational from 8:30am to 5:00pm on the appointed days,” he added. The EC chairman, Hajji Aziz Kasujja, said the candidates for Nakawa, Makindye, Kampala Central and Rubaga divisions should be aware that under section 4 (a) of the Local Governments (Amendment) Act, 2001, the city divisions were elevated to the level of municipalities. “nomination fees are as follows, chairpersons for city divisions sh100,000 and councillors sh50, 000,” Kasujja said.
