KABAKA Ronald Mutebi has urged Ugandans to promote the country’s rich culture and appreciate traditional values of the different peoples in Uganda.
Mutebi was on Friday launching Uganda’s first heritage trail, The Kabaka’s Trail, at the Bulange gardens where he toured an exhibition of the trail’s sites with the Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry Prof. Edward Rugumayo.
He was accompanied by the Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, Katikkiro Ssemwogerere, Princesses Dorothy Nassolo, Zalwango and Prince David Wassajja.
Others present were Justice Julia Ssebutinde, Bishop Michael Ssenyimba of Mukono, Louis and John Tinker from the British-based charity, Action for Conservation through Tourism (ACT).
Mutebi appealed to tour operators and the donor community to support the project and extend it to other parts of the country.
He said apart from improving tourism and revenue collection, the trail would help conserve Uganda’s rich culture and improve the living standards of the local community.
Prof. Rugumayo hailed the project, which he said would diversify tourism to include the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“This new trail where tourists can walk in the steps of the kings offers an unforgettable experience for visitors and to differentiate Uganda within Africa, Rugumayo said.â€
He pledged the Government’s support the project, which he said would in January 2002 be expanded to cover the whole country.
The project was developed through a partnership between the guardian communities of the heritage sites, the Kabaka Foundation, The Uganda Community Tourism Association and the ACT.
