Dominant villa

* Champs turn guns on Africa By James Bakama SC Villa's dominance of local soccer scene has brought forth feelings of monotony in the Joogos' camp prompting plans for change of strategy in the next continental season. "It's becoming monotonous, yet as a coach I have to be ambitious with plans beyond the local scene," coach Paul Hasule said yesterday revealing that serious plans are on for the continental calendar. A vibrant Hasule, who wrapped up a record fifth league and cup double by beating Military Police in Sportsman Kakungulu Cup final on Saturday, disclosed that preparations are on to reinforce the Villa Park side's defence and midfield. "These have been my weak points." But he was tight lipped on which players he would pounce on come the transfer season on Saturday. Hasule's innovation was stretched to the limit when his key defenders Geoffrey Bukohore, Aggrey Bigala and Arthur Byansiima together with left winger David Obua left for the US last year. Matters worsened when left fullback Abubaker Tabula also left for pro trials in Argentina. "It was no mean task to assemble another defence line. But with teamwork, a landmark in the team, I succeeded." Hasule shined as a Villa player leading the team to two unprecedented Africa finals. But whether he can transform his playing charisma to coaching on the continental arena, is another matter more so after a preliminary elimination by little known Ethiopian side St George last year. Military Police tactician David Otti is one of those who believe Ugandan clubs have a long way to go. "Our competitions first have to be locally competitive before we think of the continent," the veteran coach said. Otti cited the Kakungulu Cup final where he feels Villa were aided by referee Siraj Katono. Otti Saturday missed his top striker Mathias Kaweesa, whom he said was not psychologically fine-tuned. First choice 'keeper Ibrahim Mugisha was also unfit. Ends.
