UGANDA humiliated Ethiopia in the final round of the 34th chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey Sunday to Finnish sixth among the 16 African countries in the event.

The team's brilliant finish also saw Uganda 76th overall out of 128 teams, a remarkable improvement from the 1998 edition where the Ugandans finished 98th. Uganda Chess Federation chairman, Daniel Nsibambi is a happy man despite his players missing out on the medal harvest. "It is really a big improvement as compared to 1998, they finished in a respectable position. I am happy that the boys have not declined and that is a sign of a good future," Nsibambi said yesterday. Grace Nsubuga, Stephen Opio and Bob Bibasa won their games on board one, two and three as the Ugandans hammered Ethiopia. Stephen Kawuma lost his 14th round to finish with a personal rally of six points. The seven-man team of Shadrack Kantinti, Kenneth Kakooza, Opio, Nsubuga, Bibasa, Kawuma and non-playing captain Joachim Okoth is expected back this week.
