THE executive director of Mukwano Group of companies, Alykhan Karmali, has approved a 12% increment on basic salaries for all workers effective this month, reports Kezio D Musoke. In a statement to employees, Karmali said the basic salary was an acknowledgement of the workers contribution. "I wish to express my desire that in this new millennium you will all excel in your respective performances to improve your output for the prosperity of the companies," Karmali said. He told MPs on the social services committee last week that salary increment was done yearly. The MPs, who toured the soap and oil factory premises at Kibuli, also wanted to know whether the management cared about workers' welfare. On pollution Karmali told the MPs, "If you ask the relevant authorities including KCC, the government chemist, National Water and Sewerage Corporation and the National Environment Management Authority, you can get reliable information." He added, "Mukwano Industries has done a post audit with NEMA. We have an environment audit report indicating the hazards of the industries. NEMA gave us five years to implement solutions to some of these problems. In two years we have implemented about 90 %." Karmali said his workers had never complained about the lack of a workers' union. He said if it was in their interest to create one, they could as long as it was not on the factory premises. "We have democracy in the factory. We have a human resource management which hasn't been approached by any worker on formation of a workers union," he said. Karmali said it was not true that he hired foreigners instead of competent Ugandans. He said only a quarter of his employees were foreigners. Ends.
