G.B.K. Dairy Products (U) Limited, producers of GBK milk and other products has sued The Monitor newspaper for defamation and libel, reports Hillary Nsambu. Through their lawyers Kirenga and Butagira Advocates, G.B.K. said that on or about June 18, 1997, The Monitor on its front page, maliciously and falsely published against them an article under the headline: "Minister speaks out on suspended army officer." G.B.K said the article insinuated that they got fuel from the army trucks through theft or otherwise or without authority. They also said the article tarnished their reputation, which they had built by marketing their products in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. G.B.K said they had invested up to sh270m per month to market their products. They said their products, which they had started selling widely, were now affected. G.B.K also said despite their demand for an apology, the Monitor was adamant. The case came up yesterday for hearing before Lady Justice Anna Magezi. It was adjourned until February 20, 2001. But The Monitor denied GBK's allegations, saying the article was justified and true in fact and contents. Ends.
