By Jude Etyang AN agricultural scientist with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), based in Arua was yesterday elected chairman of the General Assembly of the Muslim Council. Hajji Muhammad Adrama was elected at a closed-door voting in Hotel Africana's conference hall. Hassan Basajjabalaba, a Kampala businessman, took the post of deputy chairman, leaving the highly desired post of Mufti in favour of a small neutral camp which supports Sheik Shaban Mubajje, the Mbale district Khadhi. The Mubajje camp comprise highly learned Muslims, including Mubajje who is pursuing a PhD, and will have to contend with the alliance of the traditional Kibuli and Old Kampala factions. Sources who attended the elections said the Kibuli and Old Kampala factions attempted an alliance against the neutral sect, by agreeing to support Sheik Juma Biramahire, but they failed to nominate him. Adrama immediately assumed the chair from the acting Mufti, Sheikh Muhammad Semakula, and will chair today's meeting that will draw the agenda for the elections of the Mufti tomorrow. The post of chairman of the assembly greatly influences who becomes the Mufti. In a brief speech, Adrama said he was glad that the new general assembly was made of professors, educationists, and other members of the academia. He said UMSC had been riddled with several problems and he should not be expected to solve them immediately. The general assembly comprises 92 district delegates, 26 district Khadis and eight special representatives and will elect its 20-member executive today. Ends.
