By Nasur Wambedde Teachers in Mbale District have been urged to follow the recommendations of the National Assessment of Progress in Education (NAPE) to improve the performance of Mathematics and English. Many pupils perform poorly in these two subjects. This was during the one day workshop organised by NAPE at North Road Primary School in Mbale, recently. The workshop attracted 760 teachers from both rural and the municipal schools in Mbale District. Kizza Lutwama, a NAPE official, told teachers that the 1999 assessment carried out by NAPE covering the subjects of Mathematics and English were not appealing. The survey indicates that a very big number of pupils in Uganda primary schools are not reaching an adequate level of achievement in English and Mathematics. A sample study on primary three (P.3) and primary six, indicates that only 18.1% in P.3 and 13.3% in P.6 performed at a level that was considered adequate.
