FOLLOWING fruitless attempts to secure the required funds to facilitate Uganda’s participation in the Zone V Africa Nations qualifiers, FUBA president Ambrose Tashobya has had to contribute sh5m to the national team’s cause.

Tashobya’s financial gesture, which was beefed with a sh4.3m financial incentive from domestic basketball body FUBA, means the mens and womens’ teams will be able to take part in the qualifiers that start this Saturday and end on February 12.

FUBA’s contribution was unveiled at a press briefing presided over by the body’s chief Ambrose Tashobya in Kampala yesterday.

“FUBA has contributed sh4.3m and I have added sh5m meaning we are left with sh37m which we shall get from sponsors,” Tashobya said.

Team Uganda will compete against Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and Egypt which is yet to confirm participation following the political crisis in the North African country.

“We are more organised and are enthusiastic about representing the country,” the men’s team captain Stephen Omony said.
