THE Police in Lira have arrested a 44-year-old man suspected to be one of the leading dealers in marijuana in the district.

Veleliano Mubangizi, a resident of Camp Swahili in Ojwina division, Lira Municipality, was nabbed on Tuesday night with about seven kilogrammes of marijuana, following a tip-off by residents.

Seiko Chemonges, the district Police commander, told reporters on Wednesday that consumption of marijuana was on the rise in the municipality due to the increasing number of idle youth.

He said Wigweng, Cukaboi, Barogole and Jinja Camp villages in Ojwina division, Lira municipality were leading in marijuana consumption.

Chemonges said after the February 18 elections, he would pitch camp in those notorious areas to track down the drug users until the use of illicit drugs was stopped.

Mubangizi, who hails from Bushenyi district, said his major suppliers were local people from Alito sub-county in Kole district.

He said he used to work with Basajjabalaba Hides and Skins in Lira but when the business wound up he started selling marijuana as a means of survival.

“I had nothing to eat when the company stopped buying skins in Lira. I decided to look for survival this way,” Mubangizi said.
