WAKISO, Kampala and Mbarara were the best districts in last year’s Senior Four national examinations, whose results were released today, indicating a decline in performance from 95.5% in 2009 to 93.5%.

Education Minister, Namirembe Bitamazire released the results at Statistics House in Kampala this morning.

Of all the 23,584 students who sat for Ordinary Level in Wakiso, only 15.6% passed in Division One. In Kampala of the 20,562 students, 15% passed in Division, and more 14.2% of 5,697 candidates in Mbarara district passed Division One.

Other districts in the top 10 include Mukono, Mpigi, Luwero, Bushenyi, Buikwe, Jinja and Masaka.

There was a general slight decline this year compared to last year. Only 7.2% of the 258,196 passed in Division one compared to 7.6% of 212,497 students in 2009.

There was a significant increase in candidature from 218,056 to 264,928; which is a 21.5% increase.

A total of 1,950 students have their results withheld on suspicion that they could have involved themselves in examination malpractice, the Uganda National Examination Board executive secretary Matthew Bukenya said.

The affected schools include; Bethany High School Naalya with 181 students’ results withheld, City SS Kasubi, Excel SS, Bugiri High School, Budaka SS, Yale High school in Kayunga, Bright College in Lira, Bowa SS Luwero and Bugisu High School among others.

Minister Namirembe Bitamazire said over 80% of the students who sat S.4 last year, qualified for certificates, and also encouraged the poor performers to join vocational and technical schools.
