THE funeral service business has taken root in the market, a top official observed recently.

This is supported by the growth of the corporate sector and the emergence of the middle-class, said Ronald Zaake, a director with A-Plus Funeral Services, one of the major players in the industry.

“We believe that the corporate culture in our society has supported the emergence of the critical mass that appreciate relatively new business lines such as funeral services.”

Zaake said the industry, which now employs thousands of workers and is worth hundreds of millions of shillings, had a task of breaking the cultural barriers, which many Ugandans attached to funeral activities.

“Today, we can say business is good and we are looking at Uganda’s young population with better education and exposure as a solid area for growth.”

Zaake noted that funeral service firms play a supportive role to the human resource function in corporate entities, adding that this allows companies to save money that could be used to settle funeral benefits when employees die.
