AS Karamoja sub-region goes to the polls for LC5 chairpersons today, more attention has been put on Napak district where Peter Ken Lochap (NRM) and the district interim LC5 chairman Joseph Sonic Lomonyang (independent) are battling for the seat.

Lochap, who is the incumbent Moroto district LC5 chairman, believes he is going to emerge victorious to head the newly-created district.

“I am still young and energetic and can handle political matters,” he said at a public rally in Napak recently. “Do you want me to retire? To where at this age?” he asked.

Lomonyang appears composed and is known to be an effective leader, according to his supporters.

He has been on the ground since he became the interim chairman of the district.

Lochap, on the other hand, is outspoken and says he is ready to win the race. However, the voters will have the final say on who wins.

In Moroto district, having tried for several years to contest for the district LC5 seat, Mark Awol (NRM), is tussling it out with John Bosco Logwee (independent).

Awol says he would like to see a united Karimojong community pushing for a common cause through having development associations at different levels. “Through this, we shall have foughtinsecurity and this will lead to development,” he said.

On education, Awol said he would enact by-laws to make sure Karimojong children enroll and complete school.

In Abim district, Norman Ochero (NRM) stood unopposed.

In Nakapiripirit district, John Lorot (NRM) and John Nangiro (independent) are locked up in a tight race for the district’s top seat.

Lorot, formerly MP for Pian county and district LC5 chairman, lost the seat to Nangiro in the 2006 general elections.

They are contesting in what appears to be a neck-and-neck scenario, making it unclear as to who will win.
