STRATEGIES designed by the ministry of health to fight malaria include increasing mosquito nets in the households, but residents of Yikwii village in Alebtong district have discovered another use for the nets.

They have turned the mosquito nets donated by NGOs and the Government into fishing gear.

Another group of people in the area has discovered another lucrative business of using the nets to make wedding dresses.

Children below five years and pregnant mothers are entitled to free insecticide treated mosquito nets from the ministry of health.

Benon Emuna, a resident of Yikwii said the nets are good for ,fishing because they catch all types and sizes of fish.
“We adopted the style a week ago from residents fishing on River Moroto and it is working well,” said Emuna, who was found fishing with his colleague Gecere Obonyoat in River Otemo. River Moroto is located on the extreme border of Otuke.

Emuna said, shortage of food, lack of diet and poverty are factors compelling them to look for alternative sources of survival.

Moris Ongwala, a primary three pupil of Omoro south said it was the first time they tried mosquito nets for fishing and that it was working well.

“We shall use some of the fish caught for home consumption and sell the rest,” he said.
