JUST two months ago, KCC FC seemed invincible. The 2008 league champions had in the three months preceding December swept all that had been placed before them and had in the process managed to register a seven-match unbeaten run.

This was before giants Express and URA FC rudely examined their title-winning credentials with identical back-to-back 1-0 defeats respectively in the space of six days.

Although it had been a magnificent start to the season for KCC, one in which their all-round strengths had deservedly transformed them into worthy table leaders, the two defeats raised doubts as to whether KCC had the right mentality and character to win the championship.

There have since been doubts simply because KCC seemed to develop cold feet against fellow giants.

“We didn’t freeze. That’s not true. Before the Express game, most of my players had been fatigued after the East Africa games. Against URA, we were let down by poor refereeing, otherwise we could have won both games,” KCC coach Matia Lule stated.

Whatever excuses Lule fronts for the two defeats, the best possible opportunity to dispel all doubts would be plundering a win against derby rivals SC Villa today at Nakivubo Stadium
Of course, a winning start to the final bend of the season would mean a lot for the two sides’ confidence.

The challenge for KCC now is to build on their turn of events in the last one month by achieving a third straight win, particularly against one of the big boys -an imperative for any title-winning team.

Although the two sides’ played out to a goalless first round draw, KCC star winger Brian Majwega, whose speed of thought and foot have done wonders this season so far– is optimistic it could be the club’s pivotal moment. Beating Villa wouldn’t guarantee that but it would underline their intent.

If allowed to express himself, Majwega should alongside Caesar Sapewo, bring the best out of KCC’s new recruit Kamada Ssebagala in the face of a Villa side still struggling to revive its good old silverware-winning days.

It is hard to credit that it’s over six years since Villa last lifted the league title.
