IT was an NRM affair during the national youth elections held at the YMCA complex in Jinja town over the weekend.

The party secured an extra parliamentarian to add on to the majority already destined for the House after Monicah Amoding, a delegate from Soroti, was elected the national female youth MP. NRM will have over 280 MPs in the next Parliament.

According to results declared by Jennifer Angeyo, the returning officer, Amoding polled 249 votes against her only rival, Deborah Asasira (independent), who garnered 89 votes.

Amoding, who was shocked by the support she received, pledged to work for the future and development of young people across the country.

The race had attracted three contestants although Dr. Isabella Epiu, an independent candidate, stood down at the last minute in support of Amoding.

Sarah Nakalembe Kisakye, the Inter-Party Cooperation candidate, lost the opportunity because she turned up after the nominations had been closed and campaigns were underway.

She, however, blamed the Electoral Commission for closing the nominations without informing the delegates.

“It was a political move to exclude me since all the other three candidates belong to the NRM,” Kisakye said.

She said she would make consultations before deciding on the next move.
But Angeyo said all delegates and aspirants had been informed of the nomination and election procedures the previous day.

The nominations that were supposed to be held on Saturday were pushed to Sunday after the delegates turned chaotic, protesting the disqualification of the Lira delegate, Omodo Omodo, from contesting for the National Youth Council chairmanship position.

Observers from the African Youth Development Link blamed Kisakye for her fate, saying she had not gone for nominations.

NRM candidates also took most positions on the national youth council.
