KYAMBOGO university students yesterday demonstrated, demanding a change in the administration.

The peaceful march started at 10:00am at the faculty of social sciences when a lecturer refused to teach in an environment that was not hygienic.

According to sources at the university, the students stormed out of the classroom after the lecturer left.

A group of students then forced others to leave the lecture rooms and join them in the demonstration.

They gathered in front of the university administration block with placards demanding the resignation of the chancellor.

The students accused him of failing to improve the hygiene and sanitation, toilet facilities and failure to furnish the computer laboratory.

Other demands were delays in re¬lease of results, provision of enough water and furniture.

“We need an explanation from the university administration why they treat us like animals,” the students demanded.

At 11:00am heavily armed Police was deployed at the university to contain the situation that was feared to result into destruction of property.

Some police officers took strategic positions in front of the administration block, science laboratories and main library.

The demonstrators forced the organisers of the guild presidential debate to stop five minutes into the proceedings.

A guild candidate, Lawrence Katumba, tried to negotiate with them but he was reportedly beaten.

Lawrence Madete, the public relations officer at the university, told a press conference at his office that a new firm had been hired to offer cleaning services.

He said the university would hire custodians from various faculties to ensure close monitoring and supervision of the cleaning company.
Madete assured the students that their results would be released today (Friday).

He said the water shortage was a crisis experienced nationally and called on the National Water and Sewerage Corporation to respond accordingly.
